Post Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Below is what Ms. Tan has to say about “gastric sleeve op”. She lost 19kg in 6 months after the operation.

“ I am totally delighted with the “GS Op” as I feel that I have been given a second go at life. I gained tremendous confidence and happiness along the way. I could not thank Dr. Cha and his team of nutritionist and nurses enough.

I have always been overweight and had problems resisting food. I was taking prescription meds to control high blood pressure which was steadily rising due to my weight, extreme lethargicness and sleep apnea.

I had always thought about weight loss surgery but always thought it was unaffordable and that no doctor in Malaysia did it. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Dr Cha at SJMC was doing the procedure. Dr. Cha was very reassuring and made me feel very comfortable.

Operation was just a small discomfort. My wounds healed beautifully and to date, half year later, the scarring is minimal. My sleep apnea is almost gone and my blood pressure has gone down so much that my medication will be reviewed.

People I have known are walking by me because they do not recognize me. When I do call them, they would be shocked and tell me how different a person I look-more radiant, energetic, happy and healthy.

For those people are obese and are considering this operation, all I can say is "just do it". I took out a loan on my credit cards to pay for it and paid it back. It is well worth every single sen to gain back my health and my life. There always is a way to gain the life you want.”

Post Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery

Elviswari lost 30 kilograms after gastric banding(almost 70 percent of her excess body weight) in slightly over two years – much more than Dr. Cha’s goal of 50 percent. At 168cm and her heaviest weight of 99 kilograms, her BMI peaked at 35.1. Today, she weighs 70 kilograms and has a BMI of 24.8. She attributes her success to her ability to change her eating habits and regular maintenance, which meant seeing Dr. Cha for follow-up appointments every month.

“ I eat very small portions these days. I also ensure I chew my food extremely carefully or blend certain types of foods which are otherwise hard to swallow, like fried chicken. By eating this way, I avoid getting sick or nauseous” explained Elviswari. Swallowing food in chunks may block the opening and prevent the passage of food, which can then cause nausea and vomiting.”

Isabella, on the other hand, has lost 18 kilograms after gastric banding in slightly less than 2 years, which is just 2 kilograms shy of her goal weight. Standing 157cm tall, she used to weigh 85 kilograms with a BMI of 34.5. Today, she weighs 67 kilograms with a BMI of 27.2. While this is no mean feat, she admits that it hasn’t been easy, as she wasn’t a disciplined eater to begin with.

“I find it hard to eat my meals on time, especially with my demanding schedule. I don’t always eat the right types of foods or chew properly either, which makes me throw up. However, I realize that this can’t be very good for my health in the long run, so I am hoping to change. It is ongoing battle, honestly” she confesses.
