Surgical (Weight-Loss Surgery)

Diet is the most important treatment for obesity. Weight-loss surgery is an added tool to help patient to diet. Without surgery, 95% of people who successfully lose the weight by dieting, excercise and medications combined, will fail to sustain the weight loss in 1 to 2 years. This is proven again and again. Obese person tends to go through cycles of weight loss and weight gain, which give a yo-yo effect that is probably detrimental to their body.

There are various diet guidelines, whether it is medically supervised, or commercially available, will help you to lose weight initially. There are all equal in term amount of weight loss. The difference will only be in terms of changes in biomedical profiles, such as lipid profiles, glucose and insulin levels, urinary secretion of nitrogen, and respiratory quotients. Your physician will care about these changes to know that whether you are at risks of developing diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular risk. However, amount of weight loss will still be the main concern, because we know, even just a drop of 10% of your weight, significant benefits are obtained.

Behavioral modification is normally incorporated into dieting. At the end of the day, enthusiasm and persistence are the virtues of success.

Exercise maintains weight loss. Exercise without proper diet will not help you lose weight. Running on a treadmill for 30min probably will burn about 300kcal for you. However, have a can of coke after the run will replace about 125kcal back to you, and a bar of candy will probably give you back another 200kcal of energy. You will end up with 25kcal extra compared to before running. It is better not to run and just drink plain water, and sitting on a couch and watch your favourite movie! Exercise is not bad. In fact, exercise is still good and important for your musculo-skeletal and cardiovascular systems. We need exercise to feel good and maintain healthy lifestyle. But we need to combine exercise and diet to lose weight.

You need physician to start on medication for weight loss. There are various medications available. You need to know their side effects prior to starting. And you need to know it is not permanent, and you have to take it long term. Again, you chances of regain weight are about 95% after one year, even if you combine them with diet and exercise.
